In an interaction with OVERDRIVE, MG Motor India head Rajeev Chaba has stated that his firm plans to sell 30,000 electric vehicles in the country by next year. This will largely come on the back of the fifth model the brand plans to launch in the country. This will be an EV to sit below the recently revised MG ZS EV and will compete with the Tata Nexon EV.

MG Motor India EV push

The next couple of years will see some strong focus from MG Motor India in the electric vehicle space. The company plans to sell its full allocation of 6,000 ZS EVs in India in 2022. This will increase to 10,000 units in 2023 with the supply constraints resolved. Combined with the sales of the upcoming EV and capacity expansion at its Halol facility, reports suggest that 25 per cent of MG's sales in India will come from electric vehicles next year.

Other reports also say that MG Motor India is looking at shoring up its position as an EV maker by setting up a new EV subsidiary in the country. The company is looking to go the Tata Motors way in this regard and is looking to attract private equity investment in this new firm. The investment is said to be to the tune of Rs 2,650-3,800 crore.

MG Motor India upcoming EV

MG Motor India has announced its next offering for India will be an EV that will be priced between Rs 10 to 15 lakh. This MG EV will be a crossover and will launch in the first quarter of 2023. MG Motor India has also stated that the new EV crossover will be based on a global offering that will be reworked for the Indian market. The new crossover is expected to be based on a new global architecture that was possibly previewed by the MG One.

The MG EV crossover should come with a roughly 30 to 40 kWh battery pack and should be good for a 200 to 300 km real-world range. A single-motor set-up can be expected with segment-matching power and torque figures. We can also expect to see significant fast-charging capabilities.
