While features and looks appeal most when it comes to the buying bit, there is another aspect that comes into play and that is fuel efficiency. Now that would be you just simply opt for a diesel option, but most manufacturers have completely phased out the diesel powerplant. The larger curb weight and inferior aerodynamic efficiency of SUVs necessitate more powerful petrol engines, which are certain to give worse fuel economy. Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara/Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder 27.97 kmpl

The 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with Toyota's TNGA Atkinson cycle hybrid technology is mated to an e-CVT. Together, this system produces 116PS and 122Nm of torque. These strong hybrid SUVs have a reported fuel economy of 27.97 kmpl.

Toyota Innova Hycross/Maruti Suzuki Invicto 23.24 kmpl

Powering the Toyota Innova Hycross and Maruti Invicto is the 2.0-litre inline-four cylinder naturally aspirated strong hybrid powertrain mated to an e-CVT automatic transmission. It can produce a combined power output of 186PS and 206 Nm of torque. The Invicto and the Hycross ar the biggest cars on the list and return and heft 23.24 kmpl.

Volkswagen Taigun 19.87 kmpl

The Volkswagen Taigun comes in next and it's obviously the less powerful version. The 1.0-litre, inline three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol motor that delivers 115PS and 178Nm of torque. When mated to the automatic transmission the powertrain returns 18.15 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza 19.80 kmpl

The Brezza is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre inline-four cylinder petrol producing 101PS and 137Nm of torque. It comes mated to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. The automatic gearbox returns 19.80 kmpl while in manual guise the car returns 17.38 kmpl.

Skoda Kushaq 19.76 kmpl

The Taigun's twin comes in last on this list. It uses the same powertrain as the Taigun with the same 115PS and 178Nm of torque. Just that in the Kushaq, the SUV returns a slightly lesser 19.76 kmpl in the MT. The automatic transmission returns 18.09 kmpl.
