The recently launched facelifted MG ZS EV is the freshest new electric SUV in the market and it looks to take on the first-ever electric car in the country, the Hyundai Kona and the market leader, the Tata Nexon EV. While the MG ZS EV is the biggest car in this comparison and the Tata Nexon EV being the smallest, the Hyundai Kona does give the MG a good run for its money by having the longest wheelbase. In terms of height is where the Hyundai falls short on width the MG being the tallest and the Tata to follow.

The MG ZS EV is the newest car here and it gets most of its exterior updated styling cues from the MG Astor. The refreshed MG ZS EV gets new styling, bringing it in line with the MG Astor. The LED headlamps are similar to the petrol-powered SUV but the front grille section has now been blanked out, housing only the charging port.

The Tata Nexon EV is the best-selling electric car in India at the moment it's very clear to see why that is. A very stylish SUV with plenty of design cues that make it stand out. The Hyundai Kona was the first-ever electric car in India and while it has been around more than the other two, it still does have its own bits of style. The Tata is the only one here that drives on 16-inch alloys, while the other two sit on 17-inches.

The 2022 MG ZS EV now gets a larger 50.3 kWh pack with a more powerful electric motor putting out 176PS. The ARAI certified range has gone up to 461 km as a result, up from the 419 km offered by the previous 44.5 kWh battery pack. The 2022 MG ZS EV can do 0 to 100 kmph in 8.5s.

The Tata Nexon EV's lithium-ion battery is of 30.2kWh capacity and feeds a permanent-magnet AC motor that puts 129PS and 245Nm through the front wheels. This allows for a brisk 0 to 100kmph time of 9.9s, the top speed is limited to 120kmph. The SUV will do over 312km on a full charge as per the ARAI, a real-world range of around 240km can be expected in the real world.

The Hyundai Kona Ele ctric is equipped with a 39.2kWh battery pack that is expected to deliver a driving range of 452 kilometres. The MGZS EV facelift can charge its battery to 80 percent capacity in an hour with a 50kW charger, whereas the Kona Electric takes 57 minutes. The Nexon EV takes an hour to charge to 80 percent, just like the MG, but it uses a 25kW charger.

The MG ZS EV now gets the Astor's new dash layout with its soft-touch materials, rotary air vents and layered look. This is done up in an all-black theme with contract stitching. The centre console houses a rotary gear shifter, the drive mode and regen level switches and larger storage spaces. Feature highlights are the new 10.1-inch touchscreen with the AI assistant, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, powered seats, panoramic sunroof, e-brake, heated ORVM, rain-sensing wipers, PM2.5 filter, front and rear armrests and a Bluetooth-operated digital key for locking/unlocking and starting the ZS EV.

The 2022 ZS EV also gets some of the advanced safety features that are available with the Astor, although not the full Level 2 ADAS capability. This includes lane change assist, blindspot detection and rear cross-traffic alert. Passive safety features that may be offered are a 360-degree camera, traction control, hill-descent control, ABS with EBD and 6 airbags.

The Tata Nexon EV has an electric sunroof, automatic climate control, a height-adjustable driver seat, a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a flat-bottom steering wheel and a cooled glove box on the inside. The Hyundai Kona gets features like an all-digital instrument console, ventilated front seats, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, etc.

The MG ZS EV starts from Rs 21.99 lakh and the top-spec variant goes to Rs 25.88 lakh. The Hyundai Kona starts from Rs 23.79 lakh onwards while the Tata Nexon EV is the cheapest car here starting at just Rs 14.29 lakh. All prices are ex-showroom.
