2022 Honda City hybrid e:HEV launched in India at Rs 19.50 lakh, one ZX variant

Honda Cars India has launched the Honda City e:HEV hybrid in a single top-spec ZX variant. This hybrid sedan is priced at Rs 19.50 lakh which is about Rs 4 lakh more than the standard ZX petrol CVT. Production of the City hybrid has already begun and bookings are open for Rs 21,000 across Honda showrooms and online.

The Honda City hybrid is powered by a 1.5-litre Atkinson cycle four-cylinder petrol that put out 98PS and 127 Nm. This pairs with a 109PS and 253 Nm electric motor fed by a 0.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The system makes a combined 126PS and 253 Nm and returns 26.5 kmpl. The system pairs the engine with two electric motors, one connected to the e-CVT gearbox and the other drawing power from the engine. The system functions in three modes, EV-only, Hybrid and Engine only. At low speeds below 40 kmph, the City hybrid functions only on electric power up to 80 per cent of the time, the engine starts supplementing the electric motor at speeds between 40 to 80 kmph for about half the time while at speeds between 80 to 120 kmph, the engine is largely directing proceeding with some electric assistance. In these modes, the CVT ensures the engine is at its most effiecnt revs. At over 120 kmph, both the engine and the electric motor are powering the City Hybrid in equal measure.

2022 Honda City Hybrid e:HEV ADAS, safety features

Along with the bird tech, the 2022 Honda City e:HEV also debuts the Honda Sensing suite of ADAS functions in India. This system uses a front windshield camera to offer active safety features like adaptive cruise control forward collision warning and auto emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist and auto high-beam. The Honda City hybrid also features rear disc brakes and an electronic parking brake. This is addition to the six airbags, hill hold control, stability control and other safety kit already present on the top-en City ZX.

The hybrid City is differentiated from the regular sedan by a different grille mesh, new fog lamp inserts, a sportier rear diffuser, boot spoiler and e;HEV badges. The interior is done up in a black and ivory colour scheme with LED headlamps, sunroof, 16-inch alloys, climate control, powered seats, tilt and telescopic steering, semi-digital instrumentation, an 8-inch touchscreen with wired Android Auto/Apple Carplay, ambient lighting and newly added smartwatch integration for the Honda Connect suite of connected-car tech. The Honda City Hybrid comes with a three-year/unlimited warranty and an eight-year warranty for the battery pack. The Honda City hybrid is about Rs 4.5 lakh more than the ZX petrol CVT and Rs 4.3 lakh more than the top diesel City. The City e:HEV has no direct rivals but competes on price with mid-sized SUVs.
