Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV expected be launched in India in 2023, testing begins Q3 2022

Along the sidelines of the launch of the Volkswagen Virtus, the German carmaker announced it may launch its first electric car in India in 2023. This will be the Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV, based on the MEB architecture.

Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUV India launch

Volkswagen will begin testing the ID.4 in Indian conditions in September, since the EV is a global offering not specifically developed for the Indian market. Post the testing phase, the ID.4 will be brought in as a CBU under the 2,500-unit non-homologation clause. The company is still uncertain of the total number of units it will be able to bring in given the current supply constraints plaguing carmakers globally. The company will test out the market for its EVs in India through this route before it decides on any local assembly plans.
