Ninth-generation BMW 5 Series spied testing ahead of 2023 global debut

Although we've just seen the mid-cycle facelift for the eighth-generation BMW 5 Series launch in the country, BMW seems to have already begun the development of its successor. These images show some early prototypes of the ninth-gen BMW 5 Series expected to debut globally sometime in 2023.

2023 BMW 5 Series exterior changes

The images suggest that the 2023 BMW 5 Series will continue with a more restrained BMW grille, unlike the 7 Series and in line with what we've seen with the facelift. The quite traditional three-box shape also seems to have been carried over although some sharper detailing is apparent with the slim headlamps and the more prominent leading edge to the bonnet. This seems to have been done to improve aero-efficiency, which should also be the rationale behind the flush door handles this prototype seems to be carrying, first seen on the BMW i4. The rear should get the L-shaped LED lighting that is becoming common across the brand's products and a less visually heavy look.

2023 BMW 5 Series engines, PHEV, EV

The next BMW 5 Series should continue with a revised version of its current CLAR architecture, although a plug-in hybrid version and well as fully-electric derivatives should be seen. BMW has followed a similar strategy with the current X3 and 3 Series. The combustion engine options should continue to be the same 2.0 and 3.0-litre petrol and diesel mild-hybrid engines as on the current 5 Series, depending on market trends. The PHEV version should continue with its 290PS/310 Nm outputs and 50 km electric-only range, although these numbers may see improvements. The fully electric version should borrow the dual-motor set up and 80 kWh battery pack from the BMW i4. Expect to see over 500PS and 600 km range with this version.

2023 BMW 5 Series interiors, features

On the inside, expect the 2023 BMW 5 Series to get the more condensed BMW dash layout as seen on the 3 Series and X5, developed further to include fewer physical buttons. There should be more space as well as the new 12.3-inch screen Drive touchscreen with Google Maps integration and a version of the more simplified centre console from something like the iX. More standard features and an improved suite of driver assistance systems can also be expected.

2023 BMW 5 Series India launch date, expected price

If the current BMW 5 Series facelift is any indication, expect the next-generation BMW 5 Series to be launched in India by 2024. Prices should see a 5 to 10 per cent increase over the current 5 Series' Rs 62.90 lakh starting price.
