Toyota unveil rebadged Maruti Suzuki Ertiga as Toyota Rumion in South Africa
The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga-based Toyota Rumion MPV has been unveiled in South Africa, making it the third rebadged Maruti Suzuki vehicle to be offered under the Toyota brand.
Not just the exact same skin but Toyota has also not given the Rumion any mechanical changes. The Toyota Rumion sold in South Africa uses the same 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine used in the Ertiga. The engine produces 105PS at 6,000 rpm and 138 Nm of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. It offers a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota already uses the Suzuki Baleno and Vitara Brezza in India under the Toyota Glanza and Toyota Urban Cruiser badges, respectively.
The Rumion has the same lines and approach as the Ertiga in terms of design. Depending on the model, the new Toyota MPV has a three-slat front grille that is either black or chrome. The sloping A-pillars extend through the roofline, emphasising the vehicle's spaciousness.
The Rumion MPV has steering-wheel-mounted controls, ventilated cupholders, a reverse parking camera and a Toyota Connect-enabled touchscreen display in the top two variants, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality in certain models. Safety features include driver and passenger airbags, ABS with EBD, anti-theft system, child lock, ISOFIX, wireless door lock and rear park distance alert.
The Toyota Rumion also has a spacious 550 litres of trunk room.
The Toyota Rumion starts at about Rs 12.29 lakh (direct conversion from South African Rand), while a base model Ertiga starts from Rs 7.96 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Toyota may introduce the rebadged Rumion to India in the future, although this has yet to be confirmed.
