In an interaction with the media, Shailesh Chandra, head of Tata Motors' passenger vehicles unit stated that the firm will consider all possible powertrain options for the recently launched Tata Punch sub-compact SUV. The ALFA architecture the Punch is based on can accommodate diesel, turbo-petrol or even flex-fuel engine options, as seen with the Altroz, but the company will most likely focus on developing an EV version of the car first.

Tata Motors EV plans

Tata Motors has gained an edge in the Indian market with its EV offerings, with the Nexon EV now as popular as the diesel version. And with rising fuel costa and price-parity between EVs and ICE vehicles a distinct possibility, the home-gorwn carmaker is betting big on a wide portfolio of electric vehicles. With 10 EVs planned for launch by 2025, and an accompanying ecosystem already being set-up, an EV version of the Tata Punch will most certainly play a role in the firm achieving its ambitions in this still nascent end of the market. And with an Altroz EV already shown, an electric Punch isn't too much of a strecth.

Tata Punch EV expected range, launch date

With the Punch, the firm has also rounded of its last spate of big model launches. It's next offering, expected to be a Creta-rivalling mid-sized SUV, is still a couple of years away and the intervening time is expected to be used to meet the ambitious EV targets. This has us belive that the Tata Punch EV could be seen sometime next year. As for this EV's underpinnings, its almost certain that another configuration of the Ziptron architecture should be see here. We expect to see a battery pack of around the size of the Tata Tigor EV, around 26 to 30 kWh, to exploit current state-level subisies while a detuned version of the Nexon EV's motor can be expected with a round a 100PS and 250 Nm. A real-world range of 200 to 220 km may be expected with prices hovering around the Rs 10 to 12 lakh mark before subsidies

2021 Tata Punch price, specifications
