Two major brands in the world Harley-Davidson and Triumph have launched their most affordable motorcycles in India. These new offering by the two-wheeler majors are co-developed with two Indian bike makers Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj Auto, respectively. The Hero-Harley has launched the Harley-Davidson X440, while the Bajaj-Triumph has introduced the Speed 400. The latter will also launch the Triumph Scrambler 400X in the coming months. While the prices of the X440 range between Rs 2.29 to Rs 2.69 (both ex-showroom), the Speed 400 costs Rs 2.23 (ex-showroom). With this, popular two-wheeler manufacturers, such as Royal Enfield and KTM are likely to face fierce competition in the market. Here we compare the Speed 400 and X440 with the Hunter and 390 Duke.

The Speed 400 gets a new 398.15cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC engine generating 40PS at 8,000rpm and 37.5Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Mated to this motor is a six-speed gearbox. Whereas, powering the X440 is a new 440cc, single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled, two-valve unit that makes 27.37PS at 6,000rpm and 38Nm of torque at 4,000rpm. It is paired with a six-speed gearbox. On the other hand, the Hunter is powered by a 350cc, single-cylinder, air/oil-cooled engine delivering 20.39PS and 27Nm of torque. This unit comes coupled to a five-speed unit. Last but not least, the 390 Duke gets a 373.27cc, single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine that generates 43.5PS at 9,000rpm and 37Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. This engine is mated to a six-speed gearbox.

The newly launched Triumph Speed 400 is equipped with ride-by-wire, traction control, dual-channel ABS, and a semi-digital cluster, while the Harley-Davidson X440 gets dual-channel ABS, a TFT colour display, and Bluetooth connectivity. On the other hand, the Royal Enfield offers dual-channel ABS, Tripper navigation, and a semi-digital console with the Hunter. The KTM 390 Duke features quickshifter, a large TFT display, a slipper clutch, ride-by-wire, and switchable dual-channel ABS.

All things considered, the Triumph Speed 400 not only offers an attractive price compared to its competitors, but also presents itself as a well-rounded package on paper. It stands out as the second most powerful and lightweight motorcycle, following the 390 Duke. With a seat height of 790mm, it also provides accessibility for shorter riders. While the Harley-Davidson X440 carries a higher premium of approximately Rs 50,000 over the Speed 400, the Royal Enfield Hunter proves to be significantly more affordable than both the Speed 400 and X440. Despite its 440cc engine, the X440 only produces 27.37PS, in contrast to the 40PS of the Speed 400 and 43.5PS of the 390 Duke. On the other hand, the Hunter generates 20.39PS. However, it is worth noting that the X440 delivers the highest torque among its rivals, followed by the Speed 400 and 390 Duke. In terms of features, the 390 Duke emerges as the winner, while the Speed 400 offers similar features as well.
