The sub-compact SUV market in India offers a wide variety of powertrain options, including the performance-oriented turbocharged petrol engines. Hence, there is intense competition, especially in the turbo-petrol segment. Let us delve into a comprehensive comparison of the turbo-petrol variants across popular models in this segment.

Maruti Suzuki Fronx

Maruti Suzuki offers the Fronx turbo-petrol in Delta Plus, Zeta, and Alpha variants, priced between Rs 9.73 lakh and Rs 13.14 lakh (both ex-showroom). The vehicle is equipped with a 1.0-litre, inline-three-cylinder, turbocharged Boosterjet petrol engine that produces 100PS and 148Nm of torque. Transmission options include a five-speed manual and a six-speed torque converter automatic. The Fronx achieves a mileage of 21.5kmpl with a manual gearbox and 20.01kmpl with an automatic transmission. Additionally, a 1.2-litre, four-cylinder, naturally aspirated Dual Jet, Dual VVT petrol unit is available, delivering 90PS and 113Nm of torque, with fuel economy ranging from 21.79kmpl to 22.89kmpl.

Kia Sonet facelift

Kia's Sonet facelift offers a turbo-petrol engine across various variants, including the X Line variant. Priced from Rs 10.49 lakh to Rs 14.69 lakh (ex-showroom), it features a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol motor generating 120PS and 172Nm. Transmission options comprise a six-speed iMT and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, with fuel efficiency rated at 18.7kmpl and 19.2kmpl, respectively. The Sonet is also available with a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (83PS/115Nm), a 1.5-litre turbocharged diesel unit (116PS/250Nm), and a 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol motor (120PS/172Nm), with various transmission choices.

Hyundai Venue

The Venue, priced between Rs 10.40 lakh and 13.48 lakh (both ex-showroom), shares the same 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine as the Sonet. The S (O) variant onwards features this engine, delivering 120PS and 172Nm. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The Venue also offers a 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine (83PS/113.8Nm), and a 1.5-litre turbo-diesel unit (116PS/250Nm) with a five-speed manual gearbox for the petrol engine and a six-speed manual for the diesel.

Tata Nexon Facelift

The Tata Nexon, after a major update, provides both turbo-petrol and diesel powertrains, priced between Rs 8.10 lakh and Rs 14.70 lakh (both ex-showroom). The 1.2-litre, inline three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine delivers 120PS and 170Nm, available with a six-speed manual, AMT, and a new seven-speed DCT unit. In addition, a 1.5-litre inline four-cylinder turbocharged diesel unit produces 115PS and 260Nm, with transmission options of a six-speed manual and an AMT.

Mahindra XUV300/XUV300 TurboSport

Mahindra's XUV300 features a 1.2-litre inline three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 110PS and 200Nm, available with a six-speed manual or an AMT. The XUV300 TurboSport, a sportier version, is equipped with a 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 131PS and 230Nm of torque (250Nm with a boost function). Prices range between Rs 7.99 lakh and Rs 13.46 lakh (both ex-showroom) for the XUV300, making it the most affordable turbo-petrol SUV offering, in terms of starting price, in India. Whereas, the XUV300 TurboSport is priced from Rs 9.31 lakh to Rs 13.16 lakh (ex-showroom).

Renault Kiger/Nissan Magnite

The Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite share the same 1.0-litre, inline three-cylinder, turbocharged petrol motor with a five-speed manual and a CVT automatic. This engine produces 100PS and 160Nm (152Nm with CVT) of torque. The Kiger's turbo-petrol variants are priced between Rs 9.30 lakh and Rs 11.23 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Magnite's turbo-petrol variants cost Rs 8.25 lakh to Rs 11.11 lakh (ex-showroom).
