Michael Schumacher in a coma after skiing injury
Seven-time Formula 1 world champion, Michael Schumacher is currently in a coma in a critical condition, having suffered an accident while skiing off-piste (backcountry skiing over unmarked slopes) in the French Alps. It has been reported that Schumacher suffered a fall that resulted in him hitting his head on a rock. Despite the fact that the German was wearing a helmet, he suffered severe cranial injuries and was airlifted to a hospital in France at once where he underwent surgery. Schumacher is currently still in a coma, and doctors have termed his condition critical.
Reports say that the Schumi and his fourteen-year old son, Mick, were skiing at the Meribel resort when the former F1 ace fell and hit his head on a rock. Even though he was wearing a helmet, and early reports suggested that Schumacher was agitated, but not afraid as to the extent of his injury, news then filtered through that the German driver required emergency care from two ski patrollers. The extent of his injury was gauged, and he was at once airlifted to a hospital in Grenoble. Schumacher was then treated by a prominent French neurosurgeon Gerard Saillant. Following the emergency neurological surgery, the German has remained in a coma. His family, Corinna his wife, and children Mick and Gina Maria are by his side at the hospital.
A press conference has been scheduled for 11:00 GMT where more details of Schumacher's condition will be revealed. Schumacher's accident has shocked the Formula 1 community, with tweets and wishes pouring in from various quarters of the community. Schumacher's former team-mate at Benetton, Martin Brundle tweeted saying ""Come on Michael, give us one of those race stints at pure qualifying pace to win through, like you used to. You can do it." While Felipe Massa, his team-mate at Ferrari said "praying for God to protect you my brother!! I wish you a speedy recovery Michael".
Over the course of his long career in Formula 1, the German driver won 7 world championship titles, claimed 91 wins, and broke several more records along the way. We wish him a recovery as fast as some of his terrific pre-pitstop laps!
