Japan Mobility Show 2023: Suzuki showcases electric and hydrogen-powered Burgman scooters

Suzuki has taken the stage at the ongoing Japan Mobility Show to showcase the electric Burgman and hydrogen-powered Burgman (test model). The Japanese brand has revealed a few details of this upcoming maxi-scooter and here's what we know about it.

Suzuki electric and hydrogen-powered Burgman: Highlights

To start with, Suzuki is currently in the stage of research and development of hydrogen engines to use that as one of the ways towards the carbon neutrality. For this, the brand has used a cutaway of the test model - based on the on-sale Burgman 400 ABS - equipped with a 70MPa hydrogen tank paired with a hydrogen engine. The information panel at the stall will showcase its test ride video and Suzuki's initiatives for hydrogen engines. Since the test model is based on the Burgman 400 ABS, it features a maxi-scooter styling.

On the other hand, the two-wheeler maker has also showcased the e-Burgman, which is equivalent to a 125cc scooter. Suzuki had begun its demonstration project in April 2023, using the exchangeable battery sharing service provided by Gachaco. As a part of this demonstration programme, Suzuki will collect data of motorcycles and scooters used on a daily basis, such as commuting and shopping, and leverage that for the future development of electric motorcycles and scooters. Meanwhile, the electric Burgman measures 1,825mm in length, 765mm in width, and 1,140mm in height. It has a seat height of 780mm and weighs 147kg.

In terms of the powertrain, the e-Burgman may get a 2-3kWh battery pack paired with an electric motor that delivers a 4kW and 18Nm of torque. The Burgman claims to offer a range of 44km when ridden at 60kmph on a flat surface.

Suzuki electric and hydrogen-powered Burgman: Launch

While the hydrogen-powered Burgman is still being tested, the electric Burgman is likely to go on sale in 2024-25. The India-spec model might get a different battery pack, motor, and charging system. In India, it will rival the likes of the established electric two-wheeler models, such as Ola S1, Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak, and TVS iQube, among others. Not to mention, the Honda Activa Electric is also in the pipeline and is expected to arrive in 2024.
