The Alfa Romeo Tonale, the first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) from the Italians, has finally been unveiled. The Alfa Romeo Tonale is a small crossover car that will debut in the United States in 2023.

The Tonale will be the first Alfa Romeo to offer a plug-in hybrid engine, following in the footsteps of the Stelvio in borrowing its name from a prominent Italian mountain pass.

The Tonale's front end has the traditional Alfa Romeo shield grille, which is flanked by LED headlamps on each side. At the rear end, the Tonale gets brake lights that resemble the headlights and that helps this little SUV look far more aggressive. The vehicle is 4529 mm long, 1839 mm broad and 1600 mm in height.

Alfa Romeo's Tonale is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine and is available in two sets of tunes. the smaller one produces 130PS and 240 Nm of torque while the larger one produces 160PS. The most powerful Alfa Romeo Tonale will be a plug-in hybrid with a total power output of 275PS from its 1.3-litre turbo engine. All that power is expected to help this Alfa Tonale from 0 to 100kmph in 6.2 seconds.

A 12.3-inch digital infotainment cluster and a 10.25-inch infotainment screen are standard on the Alfa Romeo PHEV. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, as well as Alexa for home-to-car and car-to-home communication.

The Alfa Romeo Tonale is expected to go on sale anytime next year.
