Mercedes-Benz has expanded the E-Class line-up in India with the launch of the Mercedes-AMG E 53. The E 53 AMG is positioned below the top-tier Mercedes-AMG E 63S launched alongside and is priced at Rs 1.02 crore. This version of the E-Class has been put on sale in India now with its mid-cycle facelift but has been around globally since 2018.

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 53 is the second of the '53' range of AMG models to debut in India after the Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 and is powered by the same electrified 3.0-litre inline-six twin-turbo petrol as in the SUV. This engine puts out 441PS and 520 Nm and is supplemented by the EQ Boost starter-alternator that adds 22PS and 250 Nm. This is used to fill gaps in the engine's powerband, coasting, energy recuperation and run a start/stop function. Pairing with this is the AMG Speedshift TCT nine-speed gearbox and an AMG-tuned 4Matic AWD system.

With this, the Mercedes-AMG E 53 can do 0 to 100 kmph in 4.5s and reach a limited 250 kmph top-speed. Specifying the AMG Driver's Package increases this to 270 kmph. A familiar set of electronic aids help keep to manage this performance. This includes the Dynamic Select drive modes - Slippery, Comfort, Sport, Sport+ and Individual - and the AMG Dynamics ESP settings with the Basic, Advanced and Pro modes. An AMG-tuned air suspension system rounds off the upgrades.

Unlike the standard E-Class, the 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 53 is only available in standard wheelbase form. There are AMG-specific interior appointments with sports seats done up in leather or micro-suede with red highlights and contrasting red seatbelts. The new-style twin-bar AMG steering wheel has been added here as well as the AMG-specific menus and dial for the dual 12.3 MBUX infotainment screens.

Some discreet styling cues separate the Mercedes-AMG E 53 from the standard E-Class. Unique to this version are the two power domes on the bonnet, the twin straked air intakes at each end of the bumpers and a front splitter, along with the AMG Panamericana grille. There is an option of 19 or 20-inch wheels while at the rear there are twin-exit exhausts. A Night package can be optioned that finishes most of these elements in gloss black.

2021 Mercedes-AMG E 53 price, rivals, service package

The 2021 Mercedes-AMG E 53 has no real direct competitors in the Indian market currently. At an extra Rs 1.19 lakh over the Rs 1.02 crore ex-showroom price, owners can opt for a service package for the Mercedes-AMG E 53.
