Volvo enters luxury MPV space with the all-electric EM90

Volvo, the Swedish automaker, has finally unveiled its first completely electric luxury MPV, the EM90. This all-electric family hauler takes inspiration from its SUV sibling, the EX90, and has a range of over 720 kilometres. It is specifically designed for Chinese customers, where it will compete against an array of EVs as well as conventional ICE offerings such as the Lexus LM.

Volvo EM90: Design and Dimensions

The Volvo EM90 minivan is based on Geely's Scalable Experience Architecture, which it shares with the high-performance Zeekr 009. The electric MPV has dimensions of 5,206mm in length, 2,2024mm in width, and 1,859mm in height. The automobile has a 3,205mm wheelbase and can seat six people across three rows of seats.

With its trademark LED DRLs and split headlamp design, the Volvo EM90 looks very much like a Volvo. The MPV is outfitted with a blanked-out grille and a luminous Volvo emblem. The EM90 sports vertical tail lights at the back, and the electric MPV sits on either 19 or 20-inch wheels.

However, the EM90's rear design appears to be the most distinctive, with vertical taillamps that extend both above and below the base of the rear window. Their placement emphasizes the MPV's breadth, with a chrome accent in the central horizontal portion.

Volvo EM90: Interiors and Features

The EM90 is designed to be a luxurious MPV with three rows of seating in a 2+2+2 configuration. The huge panoramic sunroof and a roof-mounted 15.6-inch screen that can fold down and is tilt adjustable to fit your viewing angle pamper the middle-row passengers. Controls for the rear windows, shades, and separate climate zones are likely to be featured on the door, along with a tiny TFT display.

The Volvo EM90 has a basic and minimalist dashboard for the driver, with only two screens and no control panel in the middle. A widescreen unit serves as the digital driver's display and a big 15.4-inch touchscreen serves as the infotainment and other automobile functions. It comes standard with linked vehicle technologies and a 21-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

Volvo EM90: Powertrain

Volvo's third fully-electric vehicle, following the EX90 and smaller EX30 SUVs, is slated to emerge with a single 272PS electric motor on the back axle. The luxury minivan can accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.3 seconds thanks to its powerplant.

It's combined with a 116 kWh CATL-sourced battery that can charge from 10 to 80 percent in under 30 minutes. According to China's CLTC driving cycle testing, the EM90 has a range of 738 km.

For now, Volvo has only mentioned the EM90 for the Chinese market and nowhere else. Should we expect this luxurious MPV to make its way to India? We feel pretty positive as luxurious MPVs are gathering quite some popularity among the elite.
