Unveiled – 2013 Skoda Octavia

Skoda has taken wraps off the third-gen Octavia, the Laura as it is called here in India, based on the Mission L design language. It is built on a stretched MQB platform with the length now 90mm and width 45mm more than the second-gen car. Skoda claims that interior space is best in class with figures of 1782mm interior length on a wheelbase which is 108mm more than before and boot space of 590 litres, up by five from the outgoing car. Despite all this, Skoda engineers have managed to make the car lighter by up to 102kg depending on engine and variants.

As far as engines go, the new Octavia will be available with a choice of eight powertrains and two transmissions â€" 6-speed manual and DSG boxes. The petrol range starts with the 1.4-litre TSI from the Indian Jetta in two power outputs, 122PS and 140PS. The existing 1.8-litre will now make approximately 180PS while the vRS version which will be launched later will have a 2.0-litre engine. The diesel engine portfolio starts with 1.6-litre mills making 105PS and 110PS while the more powerful 2.0-litres produce an estimated 150PS and 180PS respectively. There is also an all-wheel drive and estate version in the works. Apart from the entry-level petrol and diesel models, every other version comes with start-stop system.

The interiors have also been upgraded with a keyless entry system, touchscreen infotainment system, rubbish bin in the front door and a reversible boot floor. Safety has been given high priority with multicollision-braking/automatic brake actuation, automatic park, adaptive cruise control, intelligent light assist and nine airbags. Emergency braking function will be introduced as a safety feature from May 2013 onwards.

Prices haven't been announced yet and nor is Skoda confirming as to which engine options will come to India. We expect Skoda to launch the new Octavia in 2013 in India.
