Transport Minister gets two constables fined for riding without a helmet
Despite the Supreme Court of India's order of wearing a helmet while riding a two-wheeler, the number of people who choose not to wear one is still quite appalling. But in a recent case, the offenders caught flouting this rule belonged to the organisation entrusted with the duty of enforcing the law.
On July 20, the Transport Minister of Maharashtra, Diwakar Raote noticed two constables astride a motorcycle without a helmet. He immediately asked them to pull over and reprimanded them for breaking the law. He then summoned a traffic constable and told him to fine the two offenders.
While we appreciate the on-the-spot action by the minister, we hope that authorities concerned ensure that the Supreme Court's directive is imposed with the strictness that it deserves. This incident is bound to send out a strong message to the police force and other road users.
