Tata to pick United Kingdom for its new EV battery plant

There have been widespread speculations about Tata's new electric vehicle (EV) battery plant and its potential location. Tata was reportedly considering sites in Somerset, Southwest England, and Spain to supply a new range of Jaguar Land Rover EVs. However, it is now expected that Tata will announce its decision to set up a new multi-billion EV battery plant in the United Kingdom in the coming days.

This move is seen as a significant win for Britain, as several countries compete to produce EV batteries locally. Establishing the battery plant in the UK is likely to revolutionize the country's EV industry, creating thousands of jobs and providing a much-needed boost to the overall automotive sector, which is transitioning to electric vehicles. The local battery manufacturing will also help UK automakers comply with the post-Brexit trade agreement, which requires them to use locally produced batteries to avoid British-EU tariffs starting from 2024. Furthermore, a reliable supply of locally produced batteries will benefit Britain's growing EV manufacturers.

According to BBC, the UK government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is offering incentives worth hundreds of millions of pounds to support the establishment of the upcoming battery facility.

Tata's decision to choose the UK for its battery facility is expected to play a vital role in achieving the goals set by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's government, including carbon neutrality, economic growth, and the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles from 2030.
