Suzuki Jimny could be produced in India for export markets from 2020
According to the reports surfacing the internet, the Suzuki Jimny is speculated to be produced in India and could be exported to the international markets.
Axing the Maruti Suzuki Gypsy in the recent past gave rise to speculation of its successor to carry its name forward. Adhering to the stricter crash norms, the company pulled the plug on the second-generation Gypsy, however, the spiritual successor - Suzuki Jimny is rumoured to take its place in the Indian market.
And why not, considering the presence of the Mahindra Thar, Isuzu D-Max V-Cross as well as the Force Gurkha, Maruti Suzuki could be taking a stint at offering an economical and yet a lifestyle vehicle through its Nexa dealerships.
If the rumours of the Jimny being locally produced are said to be true, the Suzuki Jimny could be undercutting the Mahindra Thar in terms of pricing which currently retails between Rs 6.6-9.6 lakh ex-showroom India.
The Suzuki Jimny in its international avatar produces 100PS at 6,000rpm and generates 130Nm at 4,000rpm from its 1.5-litre petrol engine. It is the same K15B engine that we're familiar with in the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz and the Ertiga. The engine is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, an automatic transmission is on offer as well. The Jimny gets a ladder-and-frame chassis and a mechanical 4x4 layout with a transfer case.
If the Jimny is locally produced and sold in India, the mini-off-roader could be the most economical choice of the off-roaders in the country.
