Skoda Auto take over responsibility of Volkswagen group's MQB-Ao platform

The Volkswagen Group's existing MQB-A0 Global Platform will now be developed by Skoda Auto. Skoda and Volkswagen will utilise this to build new entry-level vehicles for regions with significant development potential, including India, Russia, Africa, the ASEAN nations and Latin America.

Skoda has confirmed this news after successfully leading the development of the MQB-A0-IN platform's, which generated cars like the Skoda Kushaq and VW Taigun SUVs. It will also serve as the foundation for midsize cars such as the forthcoming Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Virtus.

Skoda Auto's high degree of developing competence and many years of experience in the price-sensitive entry-level sectors is valued by the Volkswagen Group. Within the Volkswagen Group, Skoda is already responsible for India, Russia and North Africa.

Series manufacturing of the Skoda Kushaq began in early June at the Indian facility in Chakan, Pune. This is the first series model based on Skoda's specifically customised MQB-A0-IN version of the Modular Transverse Toolkit for the Indian market. The platform will also be used for other Volkswagen and Skoda models.

Thomas Schäfer, Skoda Auto CEO, says, "By assuming responsibility for the MQB-A0 Global Platform, Skoda Auto is in charge of the worldwide development of a platform for the first time. We are applying our development expertise, taking on even more responsibility within the Volkswagen Group and at the same time strengthening Skoda Auto's headquarters as an important European development centre for the Group. I am convinced that we will be able to win over many new customers thanks to the MQB-A0 Global Platform and bolster the Group's position in the entry-level segments."
