Renault-Nissan Alliance announces new SUVs for India: All you need to know
Renault-Nissan Alliance India Pvt. Ltd. recently announced four new SUVs for the Indian market. On the occasion of 25th anniversary of this partnership, Renault and Nissan held a press conference on Wednesday, 27 March, 2024 at their production facility in Tamil Nadu. This was the first-ever alliance meeting outside of France, attended by Makoto Uchida, President & CEO of Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.; Jean-Dominique Senard, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance Chairman; and Luca de Meo, CEO of Renault Group.
The most significant announcement made by Renault-Nissan Alliance India Pvt. Ltd. was about their new offerings for the market. This is a part of its plan to offer market- or region-specific cars. That said, the carmakers will introduce two SUVs each, which includes two five-seater SUVs and two seven-seater SUVs - a five-seater and seven-seater from Renault and Nissan. These SUVs will use a new generation scalable platform with a high level of localisation. On the other hand, both the five-seater will fall under the C-segment. In fact, the SUVs have already been teased at the during event.
Renault-Nissan alternative fuel plansDuring the conference, the alliance also revealed they are exploring alternative fuels for their offering, such as CNG and ethanol. However, the brands did not revealed a timeline. But we can expect the Kwid, Triber, Magnite, or Kiger to come equipped with a factory-fitted CNG kit. Currently, Maruti Suzuki dominates the CNG vehicle market in the country, while other brands, such as Tata Motors, Hyundai also have a handful of cars that can run on CNG.
Renault-Nissan India manufacturing facility
Renault-Nissan India Pvt. Ltd. has two lines at its Tamil Nadu plant, out of which the second line is functional. It has a capacity to produce 480 units per day and 33 cars per hour in two shifts. In a year, it can produce about 4.40 lakh units. The manufacturing plant works on 12 per cent of automation. With a well over 90 per cent of localisation, this facility has manufactured 2.7 million cars to date, of which 1.2 million units were exported to over 100 countries. Not to mention, the alliance has more than 300 suppliers in India. Meanwhile, the Renault-Nissan alliance has invested $1.8 billion to date and recently it revealed a further investment of $600-700 million.
