Open GoPro API presents new opportunities for motorcycle brands, among others

GoPro has dropped a new Hero 9 Black firmware update v1.6 last week which now enables compatibility (among other improvements) with the new Open GoPro application programming interface (API). This new API will enable 3rd party applications to develop functionality that allows interaction with the GoPro action cameras.

For example, motorcycle communications systems like the new Sena 50S and 50R headsets have announced voice-control for the GoPro action cams using the built-in microphones on their helmet-mounted systems. The new-age GoPro action cams already feature voice controls, but often don't pick up the commands when mounted on a motorcycle, because of the wind noise at high speeds and therefore, such voice-command compatibility with helmet-mounted headsets will address that issue. The Open GoPro API could also open up the possibility of using the helmet headset's mic to record audio for the GoPro's video, which could in turn allow for an easier and leaner setup for moto-vloggers.

Similarly, the open API allows opens up the opportunity for motorcycle manufactures to integrate GoPro controls in the new and popular digital instrumentation systems. We have already had a taste of its potential with new motorcycles from Triumph, like for example, the Triumph Tiger 900, Triumph Tident 660 and Triumph Speed Triple 1200, among others.

Since these examples already exist in the real world, one might wonder if the Open GoPro is any new. Think of it as an extension of the GoPro Developer Program that has existed in the past. But unlike that program, the new API is open and doesn't need any of the brands to tie up or collaborate with GoPro to develop such functionality. This opens a wide range of opportunities and options for developers and users alike. As of now, the Open GoPro API is only compatible with the GoPro Hero 9 that was launched last year.
