Nex-gen Volvo compact cars to use new CMA platform

Volvo is planning to replace its existing line-up with a completely new range of models. The Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) which underpins the flagship XC90 was created for the same. The upcoming S90 sedan, replacement for the S80, too will be based on SPA. However, the SPA platform cannot be scaled down for compact models. Volvo has therefore devised the new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) for small cars and the first car to use this platform will be launched in 2017.

Future new generation Volvo cars will be based on these two fully scalable and wholly modular vehicle platforms. The SPA platform will also support the upcoming S60, V60 and XC60 models. The new CMA platform shares mutable features such as powertrains, infotainment, climate control, data network and safety systems with the larger SPA platform. Volvo's new architecture will also help the brand achieve its 2020 vision of zero casualties in their cars. The brand plans to venture into new segments and also raise its global sales volume with the new platform.

"The flexibility of CMA liberates Volvo's engineers and designers, allowing them to devise and introduce a wide range of new and alluring features whilst at the same time improve driveability, offer world-class safety features and connected car technologies," said Dr Peter Mertens, senior vice president, research & development at Volvo Car Group.

The new CMA platform can also house different powertrains such as the four- and three-cylinder engines. Also, a brand new twin engine plug-in hybrid variant has been designed especially for the new architecture.

"CMA is a key part of the continued growth strategy of the Volvo Cars brand," said Björn Annwall, senior vice president, Sales, Marketing & Customer Service at Volvo Car Group. "Apart from offering all the benefits and features of a larger premium car, such as the industry-leading safety, powertrain and infotainment technologies, CMA will deliver a true and distinctive Volvo driving and ownership experience, setting it apart from others in this growing premium segment."
