MG Motor India rolls out first Comet EV and mark the beginning of production

Just a few days after unveiling the cabin of the upcoming MG Comet, MG Motors India has announced the start of production of its first unit rolling out from its Halol plant in Gujarat. The Comet is based on the globally acclaimed GSEV platform and will be unveiled on April 19 in India, with a price range of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 15 lakh estimated.

MG also confirms that safety is also a top priority for the GSEV platform, with a solid steel frame providing a strong foundation for the vehicle body. The Comet is a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV offered in Indonesia. Globally, GSEV-based cars have been a huge success, with over 10 lakh units sold thus far.

The MG Comet will come with vertically-stacked LED lights, an LED light bar running across the width of the car, a full-length chrome trim below the windshield that adjoins ORVMs, a vertical rear quarter window, and a charging port at the front. The Comet EV is also expected to get funky colours.

While MG has yet to disclose powertrain specifications, the India-bound Comet EV could carry the same battery packs as the Wuling Air EV, which offers 17.3kWh and 26.7kWh units with a claimed range of up to 200km and 300km. The power output for both battery packs is rated at 41PS.

The Comet EV features a single-piece panel that comprises a 10.25-inch fully digital driver display and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system. MG claims that this system offers a bunch of advanced features, intuitive controls, and seamless connectivity. Although MG has not confirmed yet, the Comet EV is also likely to boast Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and USB Type-C or Type-A fast charging ports.

The touchscreen infotainment system houses a range of dissimilar widgets and three customisable menu pages, enabling access to numerous entertainment, navigation, and connectivity-related functions. In terms of controls, MG has given it a few physical switches, such as a voice command button, for easy access.

In addition to the dual-screen display, the electric vehicle gets a circular steering wheel with round buttons to control the driver display, media, and other functions. Additionally, the dashboard houses conventional switches for the air conditioning. Moreover, the centre console of the India-spec MG Comet EV could get a circular drive selector and electronic parking brake.
