Maserati's upcoming small SUV to be called the Grecale
On the back of the unveiling of the Maserati MC20 supercar, Maserati has made a flurry of announcements about its future plans. The MC20 marks a reset of sorts for the brand, and will be followed by a barrage of new models, many of which will be electrified. The company has also set up new production, engine assembly and painting facilities at its historic Viale Ciro Menotti facility in Modena. A new engine and technological hub have been unveiled too, whose first project is the MC20. The company is also setting up a Fuoriserie customisation program and the Classiche arm to maintain classic Maseratis.
Following the MC20 is the Grecale, this will be a small SUV competing against the likes of the Porsche Macan, Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 and the BMW X3M. The Grecale is expected to be based on the underpinnings of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio, but will most likely be faster and more upmarket. A teaser has shown that it will carry the same flowing lines and coupe-like silhouette like the Levante, the Maserati trademark fender vents and large gated grille. The Grecale should be powered by a detuned version of the Nettuno V6 that debuted in the MC20.
As is tradition, the Grecale is named after a wind pattern, just like the Levante and following in the wake of legends from Maserati's past like the Ghibli, Bora, Merak and Khamsin.
The Grecale and MC20 are only two of thirteen future Maseratis coming into the next few years. The small SUV will be followed by the ahead of the Maserati MC20 cabriolet and the new Maserati GranTurismo. Then later in 2022 and 2023, these will be followed by the GranCabrio, Quattroporte, and Levante, all of which will be new from the ground-up. Alongside this, through its Folgore electrification strategy, the first steps towards which were taken by the Ghibli Hybrid, all-electric versions of the new GranTurismo, GranCabrio and MC20 will be developed.
