Maruti Suzuki to introduce mild hybrid technology in Ciaz diesel

Maruti Suzuki is all set to enter the hybrid space with the new Ciaz diesel SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki). The Ciaz SHVS was reportedly spotted at a dealer's stockyard and will replace the regular diesel trims of the car. It is expected to be priced at a premium of Rs 45,000-50,000 more than outgoing trims. The car will most probably be launched in India next month, coinciding with the festive season.

So how does SHVS work? While it is not your out and out hybrid system, the SHVS brings in a bigger battery under the bonnet and an integrated starter motor. Needless to say, start-stop is also standard. The SHVS basically charges the battery when the vehicle is in motion or even during braking. The potential energy stored in the battery can then be used to reduce the load on the engine by providing momentum. In stop-go traffic conditions, the start-stop system will come into play, enabling the car to be started by depressing the clutch, provided the vehicle is in neutral, all doors are closed and the headlamps are off. This will help in reducing the load on the battery as well as help aid in bumping up the already impressive fuel efficiency of the diesel Ciaz (26.21kmpl claimed).

The Ciaz SHVS will be the first Maruti and also the first vehicle in its segment to have this technology. We have seen a couple of Mahindra SUVs use this kind of technology before, however it is being put to use in a sedan for the first time. Along with this, like in the S-Cross, expect Maruti to start offering ABS and dual airbags standard across the range. In terms of looks, the car will be any different than the vehicle on sale currently, save for the SHVS badges. Expect few more features to be standard in the base model.
