Image gallery: Maruti Suzuki Ignis first drive
Maruti Suzuki recently launched its latest hatchback, the Ignis, at a starting price of Rs 4.59 lakh (ex-Delhi). Straight away, we can say that it's one of the quirkiest cars in the sub-10 lakh price bracket thanks to its overall design. It's a fun little car that's sure to put a smile on your face, says Rahul in the first drive review. The two engine options in the Maruti Suzuki Ignis are ones that we in India are very familiar with -- the 1.3-litre 75PS/190Nm Multijet turbodiesel and the 1.2-litre 83PS/113Nm petrol. Both can be optioned with either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed AMT.

The Maruti Suzuki Ignis' funky design sets it apart from the crowd of conventional looking hatchbacks in the market
There's not single angle from which the Ignis looks bland or boring
The design of the floating headlamps is quite cool, and looks nice even with the halogen lamps on the lower variant
That said, the LED headlamps with the DRLs in the top-spec Alpha variant take that look one step further
The all-black 15-inch wheels look great and tie up the side profile very well
The progressive traid, as Suzuki calls it, helps fill up the empty space between the rear windows and the tailgate. Its design is inspired by the Suzuki Cervo, a two-door coupe from the late 70s
Even the angled tailgate and the taillight elements bear resemblance to the Cervo. The only thing that looks a bit out of place here is the plain black plastic cladding on the bumper
Like the exterior, the interior of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis looks very unconventional and funky
Maruti Suzuki has finally given us a new steering wheel in Ignis. It looks way cooler than the design used in the Swift, Baleno, Ciaz, Vitara Brezza and the S-Cross
The tablet-like touchscreen unit is simple idea that adds a lot of flair
Even the toggle-like switches in the floating AC console are a very nice touch
The lower Zeta variant doesn't get the touchscreen unit. But Maruti has done a decent job of neatly integrating a double-DIN unit in its place
There's no climate control either on the Zeta variant. Instead, you get these comparatively boring manual controls
Rear knee room is very impressive for a car which has a wheelbase which is very similar to that of the Swift. However, the rear seat can accommodate just two adults comfortably thanks to poor shoulder room
The rear door opening isn't big enough, making ingress and egress a bit inconvenient
The Ignis' boot has a 260l capacity, which is significantly more than the Swift's 204l
