Ford's 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine wins the Best Engine Under 1.0-litre award
American car manufacturer, Ford, has grabbed another accolade for its critically acclaimed 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine. The tiny petrol unit has won the award for the Best Engine Under 1.0-litre category at the 2015 International Engine of the Year awards.
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost won the award on account of its drivability, performance, economy, refinement and technology as adjudged by the panel consisting of 87 automotive journalists from 35 countries. The award brings up the total tally to eight in a span of just four years.
Speaking on the achievement, Joe Bakaj, vice president, product development, Ford of Europe said, "The 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine changed the game for small petrol engines and we're proud it remains best in class despite a growing number of competitors. The spirit of innovation that helped us create this engine is alive and well and we continue to develop new engines."
In India the Ecoboost engine is only available in the Ford EcoSport. The 120PS engine delivers an ARAI certified 18.9kmpl, says Ford. The 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol is produced in Ford's engine plants in Cologne, Germany, Craiova, Romania and China that cater to demand from over 72 countries.
Ford has announced that it is also considering cylinder deactivation technology to increase the fuel efficiency of its range of EcoBoost engines. Ford claims that the prototypes which used this dual mass flywheel technology in the EcoBoost engine have reported a fuel efficiency immprovement by six per cent.  Currently the EcoBoost engines are available in 1.0- litre three cylinder, 1.5-litre, 1.6?litre, 2.0-litre and 2.3-litre four cylinder engines, and the range topping  2.7-litre and 3.5-litre V6 engines. Ford recently announced its intention of returning to Le Mans in 2016 and will employ the 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost to power the GT car.
