Exclusive: Volkwagen Tiguan Allspace spied in India

Volkswagen has left no stone unturned to ensure that they have SUVs filling into all possible price brackets. Its India arm only hopes to benefit from that arrangement and make the most of it in the booming SUV market of India. Cars like the T-Cross and T-Roc are already being considered for India under the India 2.0 strategy that is being led by Skoda India for the VW group. But before those compact crossovers make their way to India, the Tiguan Allspace will be launched early next year.

The Allspace variant of the Tiguan is Volkswagen's Kodiaq, so to speak. Its a seven-seater variant of the Volkswagen Tiguan, that sits on a 109mm longer wheelbase which increases the cabin room to incorporate the third row of seats and leaves a respectable boot volume. Drop the third row, however, and you get a massive 700l boot, compared to the 615l of the regular Tiguan sold to us.

While that is great news for those who might consider the Tiguan Allspace for its family-tourer abilities, there is a bit of a dampener on the frontal end of the car. The Tiguan Allspace you see in the spy shots is a powered by a petrol engine and that could be the only powertrain option that this seven-seater could be sold with, in India. The VW group is set to enter the BS-VI era without the diesel powertrains, and the first hint of that news comes from Audi's announcement on similar lines.

The petrol engine in question is a 2.0l TSI four-cylinder direct-injection turbo-petrol with an output of 180PS and 320Nm. Unlike what is reported previously, we believe that VW's 4MOTION all-wheel-drive will be standard on the Tiguan Allspace specced for India. With the AWD, the Allspace 2.0 TSI is capable of hitting 100kmph from standstill in 8.2s.

We expect the Allspace to be one of the safest seven-seaters too, offering curtain airbags for all three rows, along with front and side airbags for the front seat, and a knee airbag for the driver. With Volkswagen and Skoda confirming their presence at the upcoming 2020 Auto Expo, we are hoping the Tiguan Allspace will make a public appearance at the VW exhibit. The Tiguan Allspace will be placed above its five-seater sister and we expect the pricing to lie in Rs 30-35 lakh bracket, where it will take on the likes of the Honda CR-V, the Isuzu MU-X and the Skoda Kodiaq.
