BMW to showcase its hydrogen powered iX5 at the IAA Mobility in Munich

The BMW Group are turning their focus towards development of hydrogen fuel cell technology as a viable alternative for long-term individual transportation. The BMW iX5 Hydrogen will be unveiled at the IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, two years after the BMW I Hydrogen NEXT concept car was unveiled.

From the end of next year, a small number of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, which is based on the BMW X5, will be utilised for demonstration and testing reasons. The BMW Group's hydrogen fuel cell system exemplifies the company's industry-leading technological competence in the realm of electric motor systems.

The BMW iX5 Hydrogen is claimed to be a modern luxury Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) that blends ground-breaking driving technology with the BMW X model's strong dimensions, convenience, and adaptability. The car's links to the BMW i brand, as well as its particular driving technology, are highlighted through individual external and interior design features. The BMW kidney grille's inner edge, the inlays in the 22-inch aerodynamic rims, and the attachments in the rear apron's outside part are all BMW I Blue. A "hydrogen fuel cell" logo may also be found on the entrance sills and instrument panel cover trim.

The driving system runs purely on hydrogen, which is converted into energy in a fuel cell to produce an electrical output of up to 125 kW or 172PS with just water vapour as a residue. It can also maintain constant high speeds over extended distances because of its driving capability. This power battery's energy is also used for extremely sporty driving activities, resulting in a system output of 275 kW or 379PS and ensuring the brand's characteristic driving experience.

The hydrogen for the fuel cell is kept in two 700-bar carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) tanks, which carry about six kilos of hydrogen each. Hydrogen, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), has a lot of promise as a future energy source as part of the global energy transition. Hydrogen may be utilised for a wide range of applications due to its storage and transport properties. The BMW Group applauds and supports efforts in Germany and Europe to encourage innovation that will aid in the development of a hydrogen economy and the generation of green hydrogen.

In addition to battery-electric models like the BMW i3, BMW iX3, BMW iX, and BMW i4, the BMW i brand, which is fully focused on locally emission-free transportation, may in the future provide vehicles with hydrogen fuel cell drive trains.
