BMW iX5 hydrogen begins production and testing
According to a statement from BMW, the development of the iX5 hydrogen fuel cell SUV has moved on to the next stage. The iX5 will start testing with a modest volume production of 100 units among diverse target groups.
The hydrogen fuel cell variant, which is based on the current-generation X5, made its debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. In the BMW Group's research and innovation centre in Munich, the iX5 pilot program units were constructed prior to serial production. Toyota Motor Corporation is the supplier of the individual fuel cells for the BMW Group's iX5.
The hydrogen fuel cell's claimed range under the WLTP test is 504 kilometres, with a total system output of 401PS. It employs two carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) 700-bar tanks, each of which can contain roughly six kilos of hydrogen and fills in three to four minutes. BMW eDrive's fifth-generation powertrain can accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in less than six seconds.
The BMW iX5 has a top speed of over 180 kmph.
The iX5 hydrogen fuel-cell pilot program is a component of the BMW Group's goal to cut CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030. The German automaker thinks that alongside pure BEVs, FCEV technology has the ability to achieve the objective.
