All upcoming Honda cars to get ADAS features in India

At the unveiling of the Honda City hybrid, Honda Cars India announced that all new models that the brand launches in India will come with the Honda Sensing suite of advanced driver assistance systems. The City hybrid eHEV is the first to get this tech, also debuting this feature in the C-sedan segment.

2022 Honda City hybrid Honda Sensing ADAS functions

The Honda Sensing suite of ADAS functions that debuts on the Honda City hybrid are the more basic iteration of this tech. It uses a single camera mounted on the windscreen but still offers a useful suite of assistance functions. This system offers adaptive cruise control forward collision warning and auto emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist and auto high-beam. While we are still to drive the new City, we suspect this level of ADAS intervention will be useful in our road conditions. Although, rear detection features like cross-traffic alert and rear emergency braking are missing. Honda Sensing first debuted in 2014 and is now standard fitment across Honda cars in markets like China and USA.

Honda Sensing ADAS global iterations

There are more advanced iterations of this tech available globally, like Honda Sensing 360. This system uses five radars and a camera to offer a wider range of omnidirectional functions. This includes better detection for the functions the City hybrid offers as well as other features like front cross-traffic warning, lane change collision mitigation, lane change assist as well as cornering speed control. This version debuted in China in 2022 and Honda says will be rolled out globally by 2030.

In its newest form, Honda Sensing Elite, which recently debuted in Japan with flagship Honda Legend sedan, the system offer Level 3 autonomous driving capabilities. It does this with GPS and 3D maps, along with the onboard sensors to offer even more self-driving capabilities. Here, with Traffic Jam Pilot, the system will control acceleration, braking and steering functions in low-speed traffic situations without any driver intervention. This version can also execute lane change manoeuvres completely autonomously with only a tap on the indicator from the driver. In situations where the driver is unresponsive the Honda Sensing Elite system will even execute an emergency stop function by slowing down the car and stopping on the shoulder without any inputs.

For India, these iterations of Honda Sensing can be expected to be eventually rolled out once cost barriers to this tech are lowered and the road infrastructure reaches a point where such systems will be fully effective. In the short term, the City's ADAS functions can be expected on top-spec versions of future Honda cars, most notably in the new C-segment SUV planned for India.
