2021 Mahindra XUV700 scores 5-star Global NCAP safety rating, garners highest-ever points for Indian car

The Mahindra XUV700 has become the latest car to score a five-star safety rating from Global NCAP. The XUV700 scored 16.03 out of 17.00 in adult protection. This is less than the 16.453 scored by the Tata Punch, but the Mahindra has become the highest-scoring car from India on the back of its child protection. The 41.66 out of 49.00 the XUV700 managed in child protection is higher than the 40.891 the Punch achieved, although both achieved a 4-star rating here, giving the Mahindra XUV700 a marginally higher overall score of 57.69 against the Tata Punch's 57.34.

2021 Mahindra XUV700 safety features, Global NCAP results

Standard safety features available on the Mahindra XUV700 amount to dual airbags, ABS, seatbelt warning, rear parking sensors, speed-sensitive door locks, adjustable headrests on four seats and ISOFIX child seat mounts. Optionally available safety features include seven airbags, ESC, front collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, lane departure warning, pilot assist, auto high-beam, driver fatigue detection, 360-degree cameras, blind-spot monitoring, electronic parking brake and TPMS. The version tested by Global NCAP was a 5-seater car equipped with two airbags. The test showed that most body parts of adult occupants in the front row were well protected. The bodyshell and footwell area was also seen to have remained stable through the crash and could absorb further impact. Children were secured via ISOFIX mounts and had sufficient head protection. The four-star child safety rating came due to a middle seat lap belt and the marked child restraint systems being incompatible with the car.

2021 Mahindra XUV700 engine and gearbox options

The Mahindra XUV700 will be offered with two engine options, the same 2.2-litre mHawk turbo diesel and the 2.0-litre mStallion turbo-petrol from the Thar. However, the engines have been turned up to become the most powerful engine options in this segment on the top AX variants. The diesel puts out 185PS and makes 420 Nm with the 6-speed manual and 450 Nm with the 6-speed automatic. The petrol motor makes 200PS and 380 Nm paired with both gearboxes. The petrol doesn't get drive modes, which are reserved for the diesel. There is also an AWD option available and Mahindra claims the XUV700 can do 0 to 60 kmph in under 5s. In the more basic MX spec, the petrol remains unchanged but the diesel is detuned to 155PS and 360 Nm although only manual gearboxes are on offer.

2021 Mahindra XUV700 variants, prices

The Mahindra XUV700 is being offered with a 5-seater layout on the MX, AX3 and AX5 variants while the top-spec AX7 is exclusively a 7-seater. The three-row seating option is also available at an additional Rs 60,00 on the AX diesel MT, the AX5 petrol MT and the AX5 diesel versions. The optional luxury pack can only be specified on the top AX7 and can be paired with AWD now.
