We recently got astride the 2024 Kawasaki Eliminator. It is a modernised tribute to its predecessor, the ZL900 Eliminator, from 1985 but most of us will recall the Eliminator model name from the single-cylinder, peg-forward cruiser that was sold in India under the Kawasaki-Bajaj banner in the early 2000s.

Sporting a blend of cruiser aesthetics and sporty performance, it is powered by a 451 cc engine derived from the Ninja 400. This peppy powerplant boasts of a longer stroke while maintaining a 180-degree crank layout and surprises with its high-revving nature, offering a spirited riding experience that's unique for a cruiser.

In terms of design, the Eliminator embraces classic cruiser characteristics with bobbed fenders, a short 13l tank, and fat tires. Despite its cruiser profile, the bike showcases unexpected sporty capabilities, effortlessly handling twisty roads and cruising on the highway at 120kmph or more without breaking a sweat. With a claimed kerb weight of around 176kg and a low 735mm seat height, the Eliminator is approachable for riders of varying sizes, promoting ease and confidence in handling.

The riding position, slightly more upright than traditional cruisers, enhances comfort, with centrally placed foot-pegs providing a neutral feel compared to the original we rode back in the day. However, the engine's unconventional character introduces high-frequency vibrations and quick acceleration, deviating from the typical cruiser experience. The chassis, marked by agile handling and surprising cornering capabilities, adds to the overall engaging ride.

Competing with the Royal Enfield 650s, the Eliminator positions itself as a pricier yet well-rounded option, addressing a void in the market's lineup between the RE650s and Kawasaki's own Vulcan 650. Despite some vibrations, it excels in comfort and performance, leaving room for anticipation regarding the 451 cc engine's potential appearance in future Ninja and Versys models, showcasing its unique character and capabilities.
