Volvo Cars has taken major steps in aligning its model names with the company's ambition to become an all-electric car manufacturer by 2030. As part of this transition, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge electric vehicles (EVs) are now renamed to EX40 and EC40, respectively, inline with the other EVs in the lineup: the EX30, EX90, and EM90. Alongside the new name, the Recharge badging has also been removed from plug-in hybrid models, which will only use T6 or T8 as a suffix, hinting different power output levels.

It is important to note that the ICE version will continue to use the XC40 name. The revised and streamlined model naming convention simplifies the identification of fully electric and hybrid models for both existing and new customers, says the brand.

Volvo EX40, EC40: Performance Pack

The update extends beyond just renaming models. Volvo Cars has introduced a new Performance software pack for the EX40 and EC40 Twin Motor variants, enhancing power output by 34PS. The pack also includes unique pedal mapping for a quicker accelerator response and a special 'Performance' drive mode, which unlocks the full potential of the motors at 442PS. The Performance software pack is available as an optional upgrade via the Volvo Cars app in select markets. For owners of the previous model year, such as the 2024 C40 and XC40 Recharge, the software can be purchased and downloaded from the comfort of their homes.

Volvo XC6, XC90: Updated PHEV powertrain

Apart from that, the B5 mild hybrid petrol variants of the XC60 and XC90 now feature a more efficient engine combustion cycle, expected to result in CO2 emission reductions and fuel economy improvements of up to four per cent for the XC60 and 2 per cent for the XC90 based on the WLTP cycle.

Volvo EX40, EC40, XC40 Black Edition

With the XC60 Black Edition launched last year, Volvo has unveiled a special Black Edition for the EX40, EC40, and XC40 models. These models come with Onyx Black paint, high gloss black badging, 20-inch five-spoke alloys in high gloss black, and the choice between microtech or textile charcoal interiors. That said, the EC40 and EX40 offer a range of up to 583km and up to 576km, respectively.
