Volvo rolls out massive update for its cars

Volvo has announced a large over-the-air (OTA) software update that will reach around 2.5 million vehicles worldwide. The update will be available for cars produced from early 2020 onward and will be rolled out across 85 countries as part of the company's plan to improve vehicles through software during their lifecycle.

- The update includes about 2.5 million vehicles
- A new infotainment interface called Volvo Car UX
- Cars produced from early 2020 onward will be a part of the update

The update introduces a new infotainment interface called Volvo Car UX, which runs on the Android Automotive OS developed by Google. According to Volvo, this is the biggest OTA update it has released aimed at making the system easier and more intuitive for drivers.

A major change is the addition of a content screen on the home page. This screen brings frequently used apps and controls directly to the main display so drivers do not have to switch between menus. For instance, users can change music without leaving navigation in Google Maps.

The system also includes a contextual bar that adjusts what it shows depending on driving conditions. Recently used apps will appear there, and in certain situations it will display useful shortcuts. For example, when driving slowly, the bar may show an icon for the surround-view camera system to help with parking or manoeuvring in tight spaces.

For plug-in hybrid models, the interface now places drive mode controls directly on the home screen. This allows drivers to quickly switch between hybrid operation and pure electric driving.

Volvo says the redesigned interface requires fewer touches to reach common functions. The company also states that the layout and menu structure have been refined based on customer feedback and real-world case studies.

In India, models that are compatible with the update include the Volvo EC40, Volvo EX40, Volvo XC60 and Volvo XC90. Earlier models such as the Volvo C40, Volvo XC40, Volvo S60, Volvo S90 and Volvo V90 will also receive the update. Volvo adds that the infotainment design across its range will become more consistent, meaning older vehicles will gain features similar to newer ones.

The OTA update will be free for owners, provided the car regularly receives updates and has an internet connection. If a vehicle cannot download the software remotely, customers can visit an authorised service centre to install the update, although this may involve a charge.

Additionally, Volvo says some vehicles will soon receive another OTA update that integrates the Google Gemini AI system into the infotainment platform.
