Volvo EX30 is an all-new mini electric SUV from the Swedish brand

The all-new Volvo EX30 is a compact SUV with a decent range and production is set to begin later this year with customer deliveries beginning in early 2024. This new electric SUV will be positioned as the brand's entry-level electric SUV, with an emphasis on younger clients. The EX30 debuted in Milan, is the company's smallest SUV to date and follows the larger EX90 from the Swedish manufacturer.

Volvo EX30: Design

Design cues from the EX90 through the XC40 Recharge - the company's other electric vehicles - may be seen on the outside of this smaller car. It's a B-class SUV, which means it's a little smaller but still a very popular size among consumers.

It shares a closed-off grille and Volvo's trademark 'Thor's Hammer' headlamps with the company's flagship EX90 SUV, which debuted last year. It will be available in five colours and with wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches.

There will be two trim levels, named Plus and Ultra. They look pretty similar from the outside and the upgrades come in the form of the interior and the onboard tech.

Volvo EX30: Battery and Range

The Volvo EX30 will be available in three distinct variants. This will allow it to target that low-cost entry-level segment while still providing what many drivers would desire - more range. For the technically interested, it's also worth noting that Volvo is providing two alternative battery types: a lithium-ion phosphate (LFP) battery for the lower capacity and an NMC battery (nickel, cobalt, and manganese) battery for the larger capacity.

The entry-level single motor variants have a rear-mounted 272PS motor, a 51kWh battery, and a range of 342km. The single motor powertrain will also be available in Extended Range configuration, which will use a 69kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery to increase the range to 474km.

The same battery is also utilized in the Twin Motor Performance variant, which adds a second 158PS electric motor to the front axle for a total power of 426PS. While the added power does lessen the range to 460km, it does help push this EX30 from 0 to 100kmph in just 3.6 seconds compared to 5.3 seconds in the single motor variant.

The entry-level model can charge up to 134kW, while the longer-range variants can charge up to 153kW. It will charge from 0 to 80 percent in 26 minutes and 28 minutes, respectively.

Volvo EX30: Interior and Features

On the inside of the EX30, there is only one display. It's a 12.3-inch monitor that serves as both the driver display and the primary display for the vehicle. Volvo claims that this is done to decrease material usage and conserve space. All the driving information is at the top of this display and it sits quite high on the dash, so it's easily visible.

Volvo's Google-based technology powers the infotainment system, which is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Air conditioning controls are accessible at the bottom of the display. There's also 5G connectivity, so you're always connected. This includes the smartphone app, which supports digital keys and allows you to preheat the car, look for charging stations, and so forth.

A Harman Kardon sound system is neatly wrapped up like a soundbar beneath the windscreen to enhance the infotainment system, so it is extremely ingeniously integrated into the design.

There's also some fascinating driving technology on board, such as automated lane changing, which allows you to just use the indicator and the car will change lanes when it's safe to do so, in addition to a variety of safety features to keep you safe on the road.

Volvo India

Should we expect to see the EX30 in India after its launched globally? Maybe we should. Volvo is on an electric push right now and while we already have to XC40 Recharge here, we're also gearing up for the launch of the C40 Recharge later this month.
