Volkswagen Tayron R-Line has been launched at an introductory price of Rs 46.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Positioned above the Tiguan in the brand's local portfolio, the Tayron R-Line becomes Volkswagen's new flagship SUV in the country.

- Powered by 2.0-litre petrol engine pushing 204 PS and 320 Nm
- Rides on 19-inch wheels
- Gets 15-inch touchscreen infotainment unit

The Tayron R-Line is essentially a three-row SUV derived from the Tiguan R-Line, but with a longer body. Despite offering an additional row of seats, it costs only Rs 1.26 lakh more than the five-seat Tiguan R-Line. The price gap between the Tayron and the three-row Skoda Kodiaq stands at Rs 3.23 lakh.

Engine and Performance

Powering the Tayron R-Line is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that produces 204 PS and 320 Nm of torque. The motor is paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT) and comes with an all-wheel-drive (AWD) system as standard. Volkswagen claims the SUV can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in 7.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 224 kmph. The same engine setup is shared with the Tiguan R-Line and the Kodiaq.

Interior and Features

Inside, the cabin layout closely resembles that of the Tiguan R-Line. A silver trim strip runs across the dashboard to differentiate it slightly. The SUV comes equipped with a 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. Leatherette upholstery, adjustable headrests for all rows and a three-spoke steering wheel are standard.

Comfort features include three-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, wireless phone charging, and 12-way electrically adjustable front seats with memory, ventilation and massage functions. An 11-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, powered tailgate and 30-colour ambient lighting are also part of the package.

On the safety front, the Tayron R-Line is equipped with nine airbags, a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring, hill-start and hill-hold assist, and Level 2 ADAS.

Design and Dimensions

While the Tayron R-Line carries the familiar upright stance and sharp styling cues of the Tiguan, it gets several distinct visual touches. Up front, it features newly styled Matrix LED headlights connected by a light bar. The rear also gets revised LED tail-lamps and illuminated Volkswagen logos at both ends.

The SUV rides on 19-inch alloy wheels and sports gloss-black wheel arch cladding along with R-Line badging, similar to the Tiguan R-Line. Both SUVs are underpinned by Volkswagen's MQB EVO platform, but the Tayron's wheelbase is 109mm longer to accommodate the third row.

In the Indian market, the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line will compete with the Skoda Kodiaq, Jeep Meridian and MG Majestor in the premium three-row SUV segment.
