Production of the Volkswagen Polo has ended after a 12-year run. To celebrate this, Volkswagen India has announced the Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition. The Polo Legend will be available in a limited number across all of Volkswagen India's dealerships.

Volkswagen Polo India journey

The fifth-generation Volkswagen Polo was the first car to be locally manufactured at the current Skoda-Volkswagen plant in Chakan near Pune. The hatchback's production began here in 2009, soon after its global debut and went on sale in 2010. The hatchback has since sold over 3 lakh units in the country, continuing on despite being globally replaced by a new model in 2017. During this time, the Polo has garnered a strong following in the country, especially among auto enthusiasts. This is especially true of the GT variants with their mix of potent engines and sharp handling.

In a larger sense, the Polo's solid build and ageless design were other positives that helped it garner decent sales numbers despite being on sale for as long as it was. But with production now focused on the MQB-A0-IN models at Skoda-Volkswagen, the business case has been dissolved for continuing with the Polo and its PQ architecture.

Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition changes, prices

The run-out special Volkswagen Polo Legend Edition is based on the popular GT TSI variant and comes powered by the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol that debuted after the BS6 switch. This motor makes 110PS and 175 Nm and is paired with a six-speed automatic. Cosmetic enhancements include Legend badging on the boot and fenders, side body decals, contrasting black boot garnish and a black roof. The Polo Legend Edition will be limited to the last 700 units of the hatchback with prices expected to be at par with the standard GT TSI i.e. Rs 10.25 lakh.
