Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor trademarked for Indian market

Toyota India has filed a patent for the name 'Urban Cruiser Taisor,' which clearly suggests that the company may re-enter the sub-4-metre SUV sector. While official information is scant, this might be Toyota's version of the Maruti Fronx, which was introduced in India earlier this year. This will be the fifth model shared by both brands.

Following the termination of the Urban Cruiser at the end of 2022, Toyota no longer has a sub-4m SUV product. So we believe it is aiming for the subcompact segment by producing its own version of the Maruti Fronx under this name. This will help Toyota establish a foothold in the sub-Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom) SUV segment.

As with previous models shared by the companies, we should expect few outward modifications aside from reprofiled bumpers, differently shaped wheels, and various lighting components. On the inside, the dashboard designs are often the same among companies, although upholstery and colour selections vary.

It will also offer nearly the same equipment as the Maruti, including a 9-inch touchscreen, auto temperature control, a heads-up display, and cruise control. It should include up to six airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchors, a 360-degree camera, and an electronic stability program (ESP).

The Fronx is powered by two engines: a 1.0-litre BoosterJet unit with 100PS and 148Nm, and a 90PS and 113Nm of torque in the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine. Both engines come with a 5-speed manual transmission, however, the turbocharged version has a 6-speed torque converter gearbox and the 1.2-litre ones have a 5-speed AMT option.

Toyota might sell the Fronx-based SUV as low as Rs 8 lakh (ex-showroom). It will compete with the Maruti Fronx, the Citroen C3, and other subcompact SUVs such as the Kia Sonet, Tata Nexon, the Maruti Brezza, the Nissan Magnite, the Mahindra XUV300, the Renault Kiger, and the Hyundai Venue.
