Top 5 SUV makers in India

The passenger vehicle segment in India has witnessed notable trends in FY24, with SUVs experiencing a significant increase in sales, while passenger car sales saw a decline. Specifically, the SUV segment grew by 25.8% in FY24, while passenger car sales decreased by 11.4 per cent. In March 2024, domestic SUV sales rose by 23.1% to 1,94,416 units, while 2,19,270 units were produced. According to the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), 24,076 units of SUVs were exported to various countries. Let us take a closer look at the top SUV manufacturers in India.

Maruti Suzuki led the pack by selling 58,436 units of its utility vehicles, which include popular models such as the Brezza, Grand Vitara, Jimny, and Fronx. The brand's overall sales for the month reached 1,52,718 units.Hyundai

Following Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai secured the second spot with sales of 53,001 units in March 2024. The top three best-selling cars for the brand were the Creta, Venue, and Exter. Hyundai sold over 36,000 SUVs in India during the previous month.

Tata Motors reported a marginal year-on-year sales increase to 50,105 units in March 2024. The Punch (available in both ICE and EV variants) was the best-selling car for the brand, with 17,547 units sold. Additionally, the automaker delivered 14,058 units of the Nexon and 4,117 units of the Harrier and Safari.

Mahindra & Mahindra reported a year-on-year growth of 13 per cent at 40,631 units in March 2024. The carmaker exclusively produces SUVs, with the Scorpio, including the Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic, selling 15,151 units in March 2024, making it the brand's highest-selling SUV. The Balero ranked second with 10,347 units sold, while the XUV700 was delivered to 6,611 homes in March. Mahindra also sold 6,049 units of the Thar. Last but not least, Toyota registered sales of 25,119 units in March 2024, with nearly half of its sales coming from SUVs such as the Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner.
