The sub-compact SUV segment in India holds plenty of competition as it is one of the best selling segments in the country. Subcompact SUVs have been a major contributor to India's overall car sales. Here's a list of the best selling sub-compact SUVs in the country.

Mahindra XUV300:

Mahindra's sub-compact SUV, the Mahindra XUV300 has been a significantly more consistent performer for the company. Last month, Mahindra sold 4,550 units of the XUV300, compared to 4,612 units in January 2021.

Under the hood, the Mahindra XUV300 is available with a choice of two powertrains that include a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder, petrol engine and a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine. The former produces 110PS and 200Nm of torque while the latter produces 117PS and 300Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual unit and an AMT unit.

Kia Sonet:

In terms of sales, Kia's response to the Hyundai Venue, the Kia Sonet has been a touch lacklustre. Kia Sonet had a 22 percent drop in sales year over year in the first month of this year, with only 6,904 units sold. Unlike Seltos, which has been a far more stable performer, the Kia Sonet's sales decline might be a reason for concern when other automakers release their facelift models this year.

The Kia Sonet will be offered with three engines. A 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired to a five-speed manual transmission produces 82PS and 115Nm of torque. The 1-litre turbo-petrol engine mated to a six-speed iMT unit and a seven-speed DCT unit is capable of producing 119PS and 172Nm of torque. Also on offer will be a 1.5-litre diesel engine with a six-speed manual unit and a six-speed torque converter unit. The manual variant is tuned to produce 98PS and 240Nm of torque while the automatic variant produces 112PS and 250Nm of torque. Pricing starts at Rs 6.95 lakh (ex-showroom).

Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza:

This year, Maruti Suzuki will debut a facelifted version of its subcompact SUV Vitara Brezza. Brezza has lost its dominance in the SUV sector to competitors after a good run with the 2020 model. Maruti sold 9,576 Brezzas in January this year, down from 10,623 in the same month last year.

The Maruti Vitara Brezza is powered by a 1.5-litre K-Series petrol engine that produces 105PS and 138Nm of torque. It is offered with a five-speed manual transmission and an automatic transmission with Smart Hybrid technology. The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza starts at Rs 7.69 lakh (ex-showroom).

Hyundai Venue:

The Hyundai Venue is the segment's second best-selling vehicle, with 11,377 units sold in January 2022 compared to 11,779 units sold in the same month in 2021, a 3 percent decrease. Despite a modest decline in sales, the Hyundai Venue is the country's ninth most popular vehicle. The decrease in numbers can be related to a supply shortfall of semiconductors.

The Hyundai Venue is available with three engine options that include a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine, a 1.5-litre diesel and a 1-litre turbo-petrol motor. The 1.2-litre NA version, which produces 83PS and 114Nm of torque, is offered only with a five-speed manual transmission. The 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 101PS and 240Nm of torque and is paired to a six-speed manual unit or a six-speed automatic unit. The 1-litre TGDi engine produces 120PS and 172Nm of torque, and comes mated to an iMT unit or a seven-speed DCT unit. Prices for the Hyundai Venue start at Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom).

Tata Nexon:

The Nexon is not only Tata Motors' best-selling vehicle, but it's also the best-selling small SUV on the market. Nexon has started 2022 on a high note with a 68 percent increase in sales, with 13,816 units sold in January 2022 compared to 8,225 units sold the previous year. The Nexon's electric version has also been well received in India, bolstering the company's position in the region.

The Tata Nexon is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. The 1.2-litre turbocharged petrol engine generates 120PS and 170Nm of torque. On the other hand, the 1.5-litre diesel engine produces 110PS and 260Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual gearbox and an optional AMT unit. The Tata Nexon starts at Rs 7.39 lakh onwards (ex-showroom).
