Tata Motors overtakes Hyundai to become India's second largest carmaker
Topping off one of the homegrown carmakers most successful years, Tata Motors in December 2021 beat Hyundai to the second position in the sales charts. Tata Motors also sold 3.31 lakh cars in the 2021 calender year, its highest ever, and sold 99,002 units in Q3 FY2022, its highest quarterly sales in a decade.
Tata Motors vs Hyundai car sales December 2021
Hyundai Motor India saw a significant dip in its sales numbers over December 2020. The company sold 31.8 per cent fewer units in December 2021 at 32,312 against 47,400 units last year. Tata Motors, conversely, registered its highest-ever monthly sales in over a decade, selling 35,299 units. This is a massive 50 per cent increase over the same period in 2020. Tata Motors' EV business has also continued its successful run. Electric vehicles breached the 2,000 unit a month sales figure for the first time, clocking 2,255 units in December 2021.
Tata Motors sales surge
The big uptick in sales Tata Motors has witnessed in the past year has been down to the steady stream of new launches and facelifts that the company pushed through. The Tata Nexon has seen a revival of sorts with sales breaching the 10,000 unit mark in November 2021 while the Tata Altroz has been a good seller too. The Tata Punch is set to be another big success, the small SUV has seen the highest number of initial bookings of any Tata car to date. Combined with competitive pricing, a strong focus on improving perceived quality, safety and driving dynamics and a wide choice of variants and power units mean that more consumer needs have been covered. Tata Motors has also been able to seek out gaps in the market and fulfil them, as seen with the Punch and Nexon EV.
