Rivian unveils new platform that will underpin the upcoming R2 and R3 SUV

Rivian, the electric vehicle startup best known for its off-road capable truck and SUV versions, has introduced two new, more inexpensive SUVs. The R2 was planned to debut so that was no surprise, but what came out of nowhere was the R3 and R3X as well which took everyone off their seats. The Rivian R3 range is an even smaller, more affordable compact crossover that's aimed at making the Rivian brand name more affordable to a larger market. The R3X is a  more off-road-focused variant

Rivian now only sells two models: the enormous R1T SUV and the bigger R1S pickup truck. Delivery of the R3 and R3X will not commence until the R2 is delivered to clients in the first half of 2026. Following the introduction of the R2, R3, and R3X in North America, all three EVs will be accessible globally.

In terms of appearance, the R3 is definitely a shorter, more sporty-looking electric SUV than the R2. The R3 and R3X feature sloping rear ends, as opposed to the boxier R2.

The R2 is anticipated to attract a new audience to the brand at a significantly cheaper price, with the long-term objective of volume sales, mass manufacturing, and stability for a startup carmaker that is outperforming others but faces many of the same issues.

Like the R2, it will be available in two battery capacities, each with over 480 kilometres of range and a three-second 0 to 60 kmph performance time.

Moving inside, both the R3 and R3X have a digital instrument cluster placed deep into the dashboard, with a large infotainment touchscreen in the centre. Other interior amenities include ample storage space, several seat upholstery options, and a panoramic glass roof. There's also Rivian's redesigned steering wheel, which has incorporated haptic control dials, as seen in the R2.
