Porsche K1 SUV to debut with ICE powertrain
Porsche is said to be changing direction with its upcoming flagship SUV, known internally as the K1. Instead of launching it as a fully electric model as originally planned, the brand is now expected to introduce it with conventional petrol engines.

The large three-row SUV is likely to use the Volkswagen Group's Premium Platform Combustion (PPC) architecture. This is the same base used by models such as the Audi A5, Audi RS5, Audi A6 and Audi Q5. It will also underpin the upcoming Audi Q9, which will be closely related to the K1. Both SUVs are expected to be manufactured at the Volkswagen Group plant in Bratislava.
The PPC platform is designed to support a wide range of internal combustion engines, including plug-in hybrid systems. For the K1, this could mean a 3.0-litre V6 and a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8. Output figures are expected to be similar to those offered in the Porsche Cayenne.
Originally, the K1 was supposed to be built on the Volkswagen Group's new Scalable Systems Platform (SSP) and be fully electric. However, reports suggest that delays in software development for SSP and slowing global demand for high-end EVs have influenced the change in plan. While Porsche has not officially confirmed this shift, media reports indicate that the electric version has been pushed back rather than cancelled.
In terms of timeline, the Audi Q9 is expected to debut in 2026 and go on sale in 2027. The Porsche K1 with combustion engines is likely to follow about a year later, pointing to a possible 2028 arrival.
By choosing petrol power for the initial launch, Porsche appears to be responding to market realities. Many customers in the premium SUV space still prefer the performance, range and engine sound of traditional powertrains. Launching the K1 as an ICE model first should help the company secure strong margins in key markets, while leaving room to introduce an electric version at a later stage.
