Nissan GT-R R36 set to return by 2030 with hybrid powertrain

Nissan prepares to introduce the all-new Nissan GT-R R36 before the end of the decade. The upcoming model will replace the long-running Nissan GT-R R35, which was discontinued in 2025 after nearly 20 years on sale.

According to Ponz Pandikuthira, Senior Vice President and Chief Planning Officer at Nissan North America, the new GT-R is expected to arrive before 2030 with more details likely to reveal in the future.

Hybrid Power

A major shift for the R36 will be its powertrain. Instead of going fully electric, Nissan has chosen a hybrid setup to balance performance and efficiency. The goal is to ensure the car delivers consistent high performance without issues like overheating or limited driving range.

The new GT-R is also being engineered to handle repeated high-speed laps at demanding circuits like the Nürburgring, highlighting its track-focused capabilities. At the same time, the hybrid system will help the car comply with stricter global emission norms, including Euro 7 regulations.

The R36 will continue with an updated version of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6, now enhanced with revised components such as cylinder heads and pistons. This engine will work alongside electric motors.

Under the skin, the R36 will sit on a new platform designed to support hybrid technology. Despite the added weight from electrification, the car will retain its all-wheel-drive system and automatic transmission.

Advanced torque vectoring will play a key role in distributing power across the wheels, helping the GT-R maintain its sharp handling and performance-focused character.

Nissan is also working to ensure the GT-R continues to offer strong value compared to traditional supercars. The R36 is expected to deliver high-end performance without reaching the extreme pricing levels of some rivals.

Development is being handled by a dedicated team in Japan, focused on striking the right balance between modern innovation and the raw driving feel that defines the GT-R legacy. The Nissan Hyper Force Concept has already previewed some of the brand's future direction, but the production R36 will be designed for both road and track use.
