The ninth generation of the Japanese market Suzuki Alto has made its debut. The Japan-spec Alto is unrelated to the entry-level hatchback sld in India and is built according to kei car regulations which limit dimensions and engine size.

2022 Suzuki Alto exteriors

The Suzuki Alto continues with its boxy, neo-retro theme for this generation. The narrow, high roof design is necessitated by the kei car rules which limit length and width but the new Alto now wears more rounded styling cues. This is seen with the teardrop headlamps and the soft edges to the quite flat body panels. The distinct asymmetrical grille design has given way to a cleaner front look with a small airdam and ridged bumper. The 2022 Alto has grown taller by 50mm to 1,525mm while length and width remain unchanged at 3,395mm and 1,475mm. The large glasshouse is another notable detail while the rear again sees a more traditional placement of the rounded taillamps and ridged bumper.

2022 Suzuki Alto interiors, features

This off-beat geometric theme continues to the interiors of the 2022 Suzuki Alto. A concentric, circular theme is seen on the dashboard with the vertical vents and the rounded housing for the 7-inch infotainment system, flanked by the padded dash inserts. Another distinct element is the vertically stacked climate controls and dash-mounted gear selector. The steering wheel is a familiar Suzuki unit with the simple round instrument cluster following the general theme of the car. Space seems to have been maximized by the thinly padded, flat seats and the tall roof. The features list also includes a suite of driver assistance systems like emergency braking and lane departure warning.

2022 Suzuki Alto engines

Complying with the kei car rules, the new Suzuki Alto is powered by a 660cc three-cylinder motor. However, a mild hybrid starter generator has now been added to the mix with this update. In the earlier Alto this motor made 55PS in naturally aspirated form and 65PS in its turbocharged guise. The motor should continue to pair with a five-speed manual or a five-speed CVT.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Alto launch India

Maruti Suzuki is set to launch a new generation of the Alto in India by 2022. This model will be unrelated to the Suzuki Alto seen here and can be expected to be a reworked version of the current India-spec Alto.
