New Triumph Thruxton 400 cafe racer spotted: What to expect?
After unveiling the new Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, a collaboration with Bajaj Auto, Triumph is now making the headlines with its latest development - a spotted test mule of their upcoming cafe racer motorcycle overseas. The familiar bodywork suggests it is based on the new 400 platform, indicating the possibility of a baby Thruxton 400 being in the pipeline.
Triumph's new cafe racer: Design
The test mule, as seen in the spy pictures, appears near-production-ready model with its bodywork drawing inspiration from the Thruxton 1200. The design highlights of the Triumph's new cafe racer include a cafe racer-style front fairing wrapped around the circular LED headlamp seen on the Speed 400 and a slightly lower-set clip-on handlebar, which is a personality trait of a cafe racer. Compared to the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X, the cafe racer could bear the most committed riding posture. Apart from that, the cafe racer test mule retains design elements identical to the Speed 400, including the fuel tank, tail section, engine casing, alloy wheels, and exhaust.

We expect the upcoming Triumph's cafe racer carries the same specifications as its siblings, such as a semi-analogue cluster, traction control, dual-channel ABS, slip-and-assist clutch, ride-by-wire, and all-LED lighting. In terms of hardware, the spy pictures show gloss black upside down forks on the motorcycle and a rear monoshock. The disc brake at the front and rear are expected to be a 300mm/320mm and 230mm units, respectively.
Triumph's new cafe racer: Engine, power outputs, and gearbox
Powering the Speed 400-based cafe racer is likely to be the same 398.15cc, single cylinder, liquid-cooled DOHC engine paired with a six-speed gearbox. This motor on the Scrambler 400X and Speed 400 makes 40PS at 8000rpm and 37.5Nm of torque at 6500rpm. The cafe racer might receive a differently tuned powertrain to suit its character with a similar power output.
Triumph's new cafe racer: Launch and pricing
Expect the cafe racer to go on sale sometime by mid-2024. Currently, Triumph India has priced the Speed 400 at Rs 2.33 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Scrambler 400X costs Rs 2.63 lakh (ex-showroom). Given that, the price of the upcoming cafe racer or new Thruxton 400 could be in the same ballpark.
Meanwhile, since the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400X are being manufactured at the Bajaj Auto's new Chakan 2 plant alongside KTM motorcycles, the new cafe racer 400 may well be produced at the same facility. Speaking of which, the Chakan 2 plant has a production capacity of 25,000 units. At first, Bajaj allocated 5,000 units to Triumph, while set aside the remaining 20,000 units for KTM. Recently, the production capacity of Triumph was increased to 10,000 units.
