Mercedes-AMG shows off SL-based PureSpeed concept

The first sports car in the ultra-rare Mercedes Mythos series has been unveiled, with Mercedes-AMG revealing the PureSpeed concept ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix on 26 May. The PureSpeed is a two-seater roadster designed for open-air driving, featuring a Formula 1-inspired halo bar instead of a roof, windshield, and side windows.

Pricing details for the PureSpeed have not been disclosed. However, production is limited to just 250 units globally, making it a rare acquisition. Buyers will also receive a pair of "aerodynamically optimised" helmets with their purchase.

Although not specified, the PureSpeed appears to be based on the SL-class convertible, minus the roof and windshield, with similar headlights and taillights. The PureSpeed draws inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG One hypercar, featuring a low-slung silhouette and extensive use of carbon fibre, blending sharp angles with flowing curves. The wheels are designed for performance, with closed rear covers for aerodynamics and open fronts for brake cooling. The aggressive front design, featuring a "shark nose" and wide lower air intake, embodies AMG's powerful aesthetic.

The PureSpeed is likely to be powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 mill married to an automatic transmission. In fact, Mercedes-Benz told TopGear.com that "a V8 will very much be on the menu". Thus, we expect a V8 to be taken from an existing Merc. The brand is expected to fine tune the V8 to make the most of out of its raw power, unless its paired with some form of hybridisation.

The PureSpeed also pays tribute to Mercedes-Benz's racing history, with flying buttresses behind the seats reminiscent of the 300 SLR and paintwork that transitions from Le Mans red to graphite grey, echoing the 1924 Targa Florio racer.
