Kia Sonet CNG in the pipeline?

Tuhin Guha Updated: April 19, 2022, 11:43 AM IST

Kia India seems set to enter the CNG market after a Kia Sonet test mule was recently spotted. This comes after the Korean brand revamped the Sonet and Seltos variant line-up significantly for the 2022 model year

Kia Sonet CNG specifications, launch date,

The spy image suggests that the Kia Sonet CNG will be paired with the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol motor and will also be available in the top GT Line trim. This is in line with the current trend among carmakers to offer CNG options across a model's line-up, to cash in on the growing popularity of this fuel type. Also, the Sonet CNG could well be the first turbo-petrol CNG car in India, which should reduce the effects of the power losses that cars experience when running on this fuel to an extent.

In its standard form, this 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol puts out 120PS and 172Nm and can be paired with two gearboxes, a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic and the iMT clutchless manual. If Kia does launch the Sonet CNG, it'll also be the first CNG-powered compact SUV in the country. Visible in the images is the CNG rear windscreen sticker, the filler port beside the fuel filler and the compliance plate.

2022 Kia Sonet new features, variants, prices

For the 2022 Kia Sonet, the 4.2-inch instrument cluster display is now available from the HTX and HTX Anniversary variants onwards while part-leatherette seats are now available from the HTE variant. The fabric loop seat folder mechanism has now been upgraded to plastic knobs as well. The mid-spec Sonet HTK Plus and diesel HTK now get more safety equipment like hill assist, stability control, brake assist and vehicle stability management. The HTX Plus can now be had with six airbags. All other variants now get four airbags and TPMS as standard.

Two new colour options have been added Sparkling Silver and Imperial Blue to replace the Intelligency Blue, Gold Beige and Steel Silver paint options. Both the Sonet and Seltos now get the Kia Connect suite of connected tech, replacing the earlier UVO system. Prices for the Kia Sonet start from Rs Rs 7.15 lakh and go up to Rs 12.39 lakh. The Sonet CNG should come at Rs 1 to 1.2 lakh premium over the equivalent petrol variants.
